The Methow Valley Ranger District is reconstructing the overlook trail at Washington Pass.
Work began yesterday.
According to the Ranger District, the asphalt on the trail is cracked and crumbling, and the retaining wall logs are beginning to rot.
The Federal Highways Department is funding the
work through its Forest Highway Enhancement program.
The existing asphalt and retaining logs will be removed, and landscaping blocks will be used to
rebuild the wall. Crews will refill the trail with gravel, and the compacted surface will be re-paved.
The U.S. Forest Service is hoping to complete the project by Aug. 1.
The overlook is closed to traffic between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays. The overlook will remain open on weekends, holidays, and during non-work hours.
In addition, the wooden railing will be replaced later this fall or next spring to provide better safety protection for children.
The new railing will be similar to the one at the Diablo Lake overlook, located about 40 miles west of Washington Pass along the North Cascades Highway.
The overlook will need to be closed again during the railing construction for safety reasons.
