Faulty brakes cause bike vs. car accident

A Chelan girl suffered some broken bones after her bicycle struck a car last night.

Sheriff Mike Harum says 9-year-old Kaylee Monje was treated at Central Washington Hospital for her injuries.

The incident was reported at about 8:30 p.m. on Highway 150, just west of Chelan Shores.

According to Harum, Monje was riding a BMX style bicycle down a driveway from the North Shore Condominiums toward the highway.

The brakes on her bike failed, and she rode out into the highway and struck a 1987 Audi driven by 18-year-old Carissa Barnes of Chelan.

Barnes reportedly didn’t see the girl until the bike collided with her right front fender.

The girl bounced off the vehicle and landed in the roadway.

An investigation by the sheriff’s office and the State Patrol revealed there were at least five witnesses to the accident, and Barnes was cited for having no proof of insurance.
