The check’s in the mail – that’s the word from U.S. Interior Department Secretary Ken Salazar.
Salazar announced yesterday that more than 1,800 local governments around the nation will receive payments totaling over $358 million under the Payment in Lieu of Taxes program.
The announcement comes as welcome news to Chelan County, which will receive close to $2 million this year.
Salazar said the 2010 payment amounts were delayed because of late reporting by some entities, and the complexity of evaluating prior year payment amounts authorized by the Mineral Leasing Act and the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act.
Each of these statutes and the PILT statute include requirements that impact the development of county payment amounts under a multi-factor formula.
